Behind-the-Ear (BTE) hearing aids are the most commonly prescribed style worldwide, and for good reason. They sit comfortably behind the ear, connected to an earmould or dome tip inside the ear canal via a thin, discreet tube. BTE devices offer the widest range of fitting options, the most powerful amplification, and the most robust feature sets of any hearing aid style.
If you have been told you need a hearing aid, chances are a BTE model was among the recommendations. Today's BTE hearing aids bear little resemblance to the bulky, beige devices of decades past. Modern designs are sleek, compact, and available in colours that blend with your hair and skin tone for a subtle appearance. Many patients are surprised by just how small and unobtrusive contemporary BTE hearing aids have become.
BTE and RIC: Two Variations
Behind-the-Ear with Earmould
The traditional BTE style uses a custom-made earmould that fills the ear canal. A thick tube carries sound from the hearing aid to the earmould. This style provides maximum power and is suitable for all levels of hearing loss, including profound. The custom earmould ensures a secure fit and reduces the chance of feedback whistling. Traditional BTE is ideal for severe to profound hearing loss or when a very secure physical fit is needed.
Receiver-in-Canal (RIC)
RIC hearing aids are a variation of BTE where the speaker (receiver) sits inside the ear canal, connected by a thin wire rather than a tube. This design provides a more natural sound quality, a more discreet appearance, and eliminates the plugged-up feeling some people experience with earmoulds. RIC devices are the most popular style we fit at SoundClear and suit mild to severe hearing loss.
Who BTE Hearing Aids Suit Best
Any degree of hearing loss
BTE is the only style that can effectively treat all levels of hearing loss, from mild through to profound. No other style offers this versatility.
People with dexterity challenges
BTE devices are larger and easier to handle than in-ear styles. Inserting and removing them is straightforward, and battery changes or charging are simpler.
Children and growing ears
BTE hearing aids are the standard recommendation for children because only the earmould needs replacing as the child grows, not the entire hearing aid.
Those wanting maximum features
The larger physical size allows for more advanced components, including directional microphones, Bluetooth antennas, telecoils, and larger batteries for longer life.
Modern BTE Design Advantages
Today's BTE hearing aids are engineered for both performance and aesthetics. They are significantly smaller than previous generations, with many RIC models being barely visible when worn. Available in a range of colours from discreet neutral tones to bold metallic finishes, modern BTE devices can either blend in or stand out according to your preference. Advanced features like feedback cancellation, noise reduction, wind noise management, and spatial awareness processing are all packed into these compact devices, delivering exceptional sound quality in every listening environment.
